AllvoicesTitle: Neil Armstrong, first man on the moon, dead at age 82

Originally Published: Allvoices.com, 08/25/12

Astronaut Neil Armstrong has passed away at the age of 82 due to complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures. Earlier this month, he underwent surgery to relieve blocked coronary arteries.

Becoming an instant hero, he took his first steps on the moon July 21, 1969, as part of the Apollo 11 mission and fulfilled President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 goal of “landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.” As he made history, he spoke the now-famous words “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Armstrong was born August 5, 1930, in Ohio. He served in the Korean War flying Navy fighter jets and became a test pilot before being chosen in 1958 for the U.S. Air Force’s Man In Space Soonest program. After the Apollo 11 mission, he chose not to fly in space again, instead opting to work as a teacher, a spaceflight investigator, and later a businessman.

The family released a statement asking that those who wished to pay tribute “…honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink.” He is survived by his wife Carol and two children, Eric and Mark. He was predeceased by daughter Karen in 1962.
